A man has been charged with breaking into the home of former NSW treasurer Michael Costa and tying up his wife in front of their two young children.
A man clad in a balaclava forced his way into their Millfield home, in the Hunter region, about 9am (AEST) on April 14.
He allegedly bound Deborah Costa’s wrists and ankles, and stole her wallet and some wine before fleeing in the family’s 2007 Honda Civic.
Police arrested a 39-year-old man at a campsite in Millfield around midday (AEST) on Tuesday.
He was later charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence/deprive liberty, aggravated break and enter and commit a serious indictable offence while armed and take and drive conveyance without consent of owner.
The man was refused bail and is due to appear in Maitland Local Court on Wednesday.
The Costas’ four-year-old daughter called triple-zero after the attacker fled leaving Ms Costa bound by her wrists and ankles on the floor.
The young girl held the phone to her mother’s ear so she could talk to police.Ms Costa suffered injuries to her wrists while the two small children were left shocked but uninjured, police said.
