Michael Hermogenes - Man jailed for 'horrible' rape

Hermogenes pleaded guilty to rape, attempted murder and arson.

A Melbourne man has been sentenced to 21 years in jail for the rape and attempted murder of a 14-year-old girl in Melbourne's west last year.  Michael Hermogenes, 25, of Hoppers Crossing pleaded guilty to a string of charges including rape, attempted murder and arson.

The court heard he befriended the girl through a church group.  He gave the girl alcohol before raping her and setting her house on fire.  The girl was left permanently maimed.

In sentencing, Justice Paul Coghlan said he would have difficulty conceiving a worse crime. "The circumstances set out here would make this a most serious example of attempted murder," he said. "The means chosen by you was a particularly horrible one."
